Working all the pedals to get teams moving

With restrictions starting to lift so more of us can start to connect in all of those ways we used to - at work, with friends, going out, having people over, shopping, holidays - it may not be that we all simply, universally and immediately spring back to how we were.

I hope we do. But I think there may be some long term effects that will need some patience to work through. Where this will impact most in our workplaces is in our teams and the role of the team leader will be critical.

I think about team leaders needing to be able to seamlessly 'work both pedals'. Team leaders will need to engage the right people skills and support to move forward on achieving what matters.

And it might feel more like a hill start. Those of us who remember the increased complexity of getting a manual car moving up a steep hill, which almost had me retaking my driving test, can explain that to those who don't know.

This is an opportunity to let our teams surprise us by supporting each other on the ONE THING they most need to do to heal. Working through what they need for themselves and from their team leader - and doing it together - can strengthen their resilience and ability to self-manage.

One great way to do that is by taking a little time to identify small concerns and opportunities. Find creative ways to test an idea in the work they do every day. And share their learnings and successes.

Now is the best time to do ONE THING deep with your team to support connection, motivation and autonomy.
