An eye to service
Whenever I go to a cafe or restaurant, or pretty much any customer-facing environment, I can't help but observe how employees demonstrate service as they work.
I look for people who have - or don't have - what I call "the eye".
As well as being efficient, those who have "the eye" constantly keep their eyes peeled for customers demonstrating early signals of need. They scour the environment for readiness to order; signs of a possible query; retrieving or replacing something dropped or a spill; help to navigate how the establishment works. Anywhere they are able to add to the experience for the people they are attending before they are asked.
Those who don't have "the eye" are focused on keeping themselves busy with the next task and avoid looking at the people and the environment more broadly.
This is also noticeable in teams where there were people who just seemed to have an awareness of things that were about to come up and would step up to help.
I wonder about this being lost, or made more difficult, by remote working.
What's ONE THING that you do to be in service to the team?
