What's your occupational surname?

Looking over some group photos of people from my school days, I was taken with the surnames of my anglo classmates that originated from occupations.

You know the sort of thing... Baker, Carter, Cooper, Cook, Dyer, Parker, Potter, Sawyer, Slater, Smith, Taylor, Thatcher, Turner, Cartwright.

Was this some early way to advertise what you did? A form of positioning for your business?
