Courage to speak up and listen

Ever been at a gathering where friends were arguing about an issue, determined to be heard, unironically speaking over those with divergent views to demand those on their side of the argument not be spoken over?

I found myself in this situation recently, thinking about Churchill's quote about the courage to speak being as important as the courage to listen.

When we are so easily divided, seeking connection and understanding starts around the tables where we gather with friends and colleagues. We say we want diversity in thinking and ideas, but to me, this means respectful civility.

Perhaps it's that I find no joy in conversational jousting for jousting's sake, and this is all simple harmless banter. I am happy to be wrong, and I will sit and listen while you explain how you see it to me.
