On and in the business of teams
As the old saying for business owners goes, "Work on it, not just in it". This is true of teams as well. Getting things done at work is a team effort. It's not just about working hard in your role; you also need to actively focus on building the team. But so often, we get busy "doing" that we forget about clarifying, growing, connecting, and simplifying. We are so focued on what we do, we overlook how we do it.
So what happens when you:
> Ignore working "in" the team: Of course, if you're not doing your work and meeting basic expectations, that's simply not acceptable. We need to fulfil our roles and responsibilities or understand why we are not.
> Are actively working "in" the team: If you're hitting your targets and getting your stuff done, that's awesome! You're doing great. But, is it enough? Well, it might be, but let's keep exploring.
> Ignore working "on" the team: When team members solely focus on their individual tasks, they might meet their targets, but it can come at a cost. They may miss out on opportunities, duplicate work effort, and end up working harder than necessary. Plus, they might not build the connections that make work more enjoyable and efficient.
> Actively working "on" the team: When we take the time to step back and think about how we work together, not just what we work on, magic happens. We can support each other, find better ways to do things, and agree on how we should treat one another.
Teams are incredible sources for ideas to make work more productive and enjoyable. All they need is a little bit of time and space to think and experiment.
