Here we go again!
I do love planning and creating a strategy for myself. Plus, it's part of my business, so I love helping others do the same - especially when it comes to teams thinking about not just what they do but how they will get it done in a positive, healthy way.
And here comes the but ... This time of year, I get a bit tired of incessantly reading about goals and how important they are and the best way to do them and how not to do them and which model to use and blah.
The rhythms and cycles of life and business can be comforting, but sometimes the whole New Year, New You thing just feels like, 'Here we go again'.
It's impossible to avoid the annual goal-setting reminders right now coming from friends, family and social media people asking about or sharing their New Year's resolution, what's your plan for 2024 or your big work for the year?
And it's not that I am against goal setting. Having and succeeding with your goals can help spur you on and motivate you to do the next fantastic thing - and that is amazing.
So here is my sole encouragement as you set about anticipating your 2024 goals. Don't just focus on the THING you will achieve - lose 5 kg, get a pay rise, go to the gym every day, have a better system at work, do projects A, B and C and have X more delighted clients.
“What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.”
Don't just focus on the 'what' of goal setting but include the 'why' and the 'who'.
Understand the purpose that makes your goals worthwhile and focus on living the values that make your growth inevitable. Think about who you will be when you get there and what this means for who you need to become on the way. Finding the intrinsic value in the process of achieving your goals will help you stay focused and motivated.
That's my two cents worth. Apart from those notes, I'm opting out. You were amazing last year, and you'll be amazing this year. Get on with it.
