Nothing Matters

Are You Good at Doing Absolutely Nothing?

I mean really good at it—deep, deliberate, sit-on-a-mountain-top-without-a-care nothing. Turns out, I’m not.

When I say I’m "doing nothing," it’s more like supported nothing. Yep, I need props for my nothingness. How lazy does that sound?

Some of my go-to "supports" include a good TV series (the more binge-worthy, the better), a tasty snack (chocolate wins, every time), or even—brace yourself—a phone call. Yes, I’m that old. I still call people to chat.

A particular favourite at this time of year is lying in my hammock in the backyard, gazing at the stars and letting my mind wander.

But here’s the kicker: when we say we’re doing nothing, we’re usually just doing nothing important. Nothing that really matters.

And honestly—who’s got time for that?

So let’s reframe it. Don’t call it "nothing." Call it what it is. Watching TV? Great! Having a snack? Fabulous. Chatting on the phone? Wonderful. Star gazing? Amazing. But make it a deliberate choice. Own your actions.

Because life feels smaller when "nothing" is just a filler for habit, boredom, or exhaustion. So, flip it. Turn your "nothing" into a "something." And then, take it a step further—make it something special.

What’s one "nothing" you can turn into a "something" that matters and helps with your well-being, happiness, and productivity?
