What's this thing?
I have a confession to make about my obsession with the idea of doing ONE THING and doing it deep. And...this is a little embarrassing, really.
When people ask me what ONE THING-thing is, I have a certain reticence about being too super-specific.
But if I were to define it, ONE THING is best seen as
"an overarching idea for focusing [collective] actions that can demonstrate change."
See. It's still a bit vague. And that's the other reason this is a little awkward. ONE THING can be many different things.
It can be identifying an opportunity, a challenge, something you want to do or be more of – or less of, something you want to do better in some way.
Although my sister might disagree, I don't really like telling people what they should do - or what their ONE THING should be. I do like helping people [and teams and organisations] uncover what matters for them and then helping them find a way to make that happen.
So here's a thought experiment.
Think about what you or your organisation could be doing better. Make a list. Write down a couple of THINGs. Say 10. Doing them would make a positive difference. It might need some effort but it would be fabulous if this worked.
Now, pick the ONE that matters the most to you.
Well, that's ONE THING. Go do it deep!
