Love the Gap
The other week, I had the pleasure of attending a session on Creating and Maintaining Performance with Gilbert Enoka. He has worked with the All Blacks as mental skills coach and manager for 19 years and has helped them to dominate the sport.
ONE of the many THINGs he shared was that we need to find the gap and bridge the gap.
- Where have you got a gap in achieving great performance?
- What is your level of discomfort?
- Do you know what the next level is?
That is how you identify the gap. Then you bridge the gap.
Not all that new? Probably not. But what came through in his presentation was the need to develop a love of the gap. He doesn't say 'identify' it. He talks about creating the gap in a way that defines mastery.
He told the story of the advice given to Erik Weihenmayer after he became the first blind person ever to climb Everest. "Don't make this the best thing you ever do."
There is always another level.
