Feeling Meh?

Can I really be bothered to talk about languishing?

Okay... I suppose.

Organisational psychologist, Adam Grant, has popularised the term for what he believes has become the dominant emotion of 2021. Maybe we aren't depressed or burnt out, but we certainly aren't energised. We are Meh!

But, the good news is that we can start to climb out of it by finding flow. This means creating a sense of progress through small wins [mastery], focusing on a single task [mindfulness], and doing something that matters [mattering].

It sounds like doing ONE THING and doing it deep.

When I am languishing, I need to have something to hand that will satisfy those criteria. A list of possible options that can move me ever so slightly out of Languishville and onto Recuperation Town and even HappyVale.

I keep the list on my phone, and it has all sorts of things to chose from - call someone, jump on my trampoline, play totem tennis, watch the swearing parrot video.

But hang on, while you might be giving that your full attention, it doesn't sound very master-ish or that it matters. But at that moment, it's both. For me, it's about mastering my state, and that matters.

What's ONE joyful and fun THING you do to slow that downwards spiral?
