Great Expectations
I sometimes reflect on how the Epic Cake Fails from Boredpanda.com mirror our experiences at work.
We know what good looks like.
We might even know what great is.
But how often - or how consistently - are we hitting the mark in our workplaces with the things that make a difference in our success?
What would it take to shift our realities to align with some great expectations?
Looking at this not-so-fine fellow, we'd have to
- get the foundations right - make sure the cake is shaped correctly and secure
- have the right ingredients - not using the proper icing is not helping here
- build some capability - practice the pieces to build the whole
- pay attention to details - take care the eyes look friendly and not frightening
If the sad guy on the right is more like your team or where you are working, you might need to ask, do we have
- the basics in place like workable systems, processes and structures that simplify rather than complicate what we do
- the right people in well-designed roles that align with their strengths and passion
- a growth mindset ready to be challenged and do better
- an eagle-eyed focus on delivering the best for our customers?
I've obviously been looking at these cakes for too long. So now, off to the kitchen.
What would it take for your team to make a better snowman?
