Rehabilitating management
To me, the word 'leadership' is a bit like the word 'wedding'.
Buying a 'wedding cake' means you are getting something much higher status than just 'cake' and you can charge a lot more for it.
Over the last few decades, we have lifted the status of leadership above that of management. Like a poor cousin. And that makes 'management' a nice sponge compared to 'leadership' - the four-tiered, immaculately decorated work of art.
And while we need great leaders, the authors of this article suggest our current workplace crisis may rely more on the skills of great managers to get us through. Designing roles that engage our people, holding them to high standards and creating an environment of fairness may be where managers play a critical role in attracting and retaining great people and creating a workplace that is healthy and productive.
