Habits

When you want to make a change, don't just resolve to do it. You need more than that. You need a plan. Start building tiny habits that move you to your goal.

When you are trying to create a new habit, the advice from Professor B J Fogg is as easy as ABC.

- Anchor moment

- tiny Behaviour

- Celebrate.

The Anchor moment is what you will link your new behaviour to, so you will have a trigger to remind you. It won't be a decision you have to make time and time again.

The Behaviour should be very small - the smallest thing you can do to start embedding the behaviour - like flossing one tooth, or putting on your runners and stepping outside the door. Your goal is not the outcome, say, being a marathon runner. Your goal is to consistently do ONE tiny THING that will get you there. tie one knot. are still building a habit here - not achieving the whole goal.

Then giving yourself some positive reinforcement through Celebrating. Really important!

It would look something like this to get me into the habit of exercising.

When I [put my feet on the ground in the morning] I will [walk over and do one bounce on the mini-trampoline] and [give myself a 'Well done'].

What's ONE THING you could make automatic by following this recipe?

When I [Anchor], I will [Behaviour] and [Celebrate].
