You can't handle collaboration

We are all very keen to collaborate. But are we really?

How well do we actually prepare ourselves and other people to collaborate well outside professionally facilitated sessions?

The skills of working together aren't always innate in everyone. We need a few basics.

> Goodwill - Enter the room with good intentions for those involved and for the outcome. You don't need to make each other friendship bracelets, but focus on wanting to see everyone contribute what they have to get where you need to.

> Understanding - Clarify a shared purpose for the endeavour. Everyone arrives with a slightly different view of what's going on, what needs to happen. Come to a shared question before you seek a shared answer.

> Listening - Be prepared to listen to others. See thier point of view. And listen to yourself and what youare thinking and feeling.

> Questioning - Ask respectful questions to get to a deeper knowing or challenge an idea. Disagreeing about ideas is fine but don't make it personal. Don't be afraid of asking and being asked robust questions.

> Decision making - At some stage you need to agree on a decision and some actions. Having your decision-making approach clear from the start will save a lot of time and confusion.
