The dangers of walking in people's shoe

I am all for empathy and trying to understand the feelings and perspectives of others.

But is it just me who finds the idea of walking in other people's shoes a bit icky?

My mind goes to the warm, moist sensation, the need for a good cleaning and the potential for fungal infections.

I would love you to share other metaphors that are less likely to give me such a visceral reaction.

But on second thought, maybe that's the point.
