How many meetings or appointments have you needed to cancel or have been cancelled on you in the last week or month due to the pandemic.
It's interesting how flexible we have to be these days.
After another week of missing some catch-ups with clients and friends - which, in this instance, I had to call - it struck me how routine this is.
Checking in the day before to see if everything is still on is just the norm. Being prepared for things to change is at short notice is expected. And we are meant to be okay with it.
Well, I thought I would just check in on how I did feel about the vicissitudes of our work and social life. Turns out, for the most part, I am disappointed, but okay. Even when I find out late - like after I have put on my lipstick for a virtual meeting - or when I am already where I'm meant to be, I find ways to make my time valuable.
Sometimes it's getting on with the next ONE THING - after I have wiped off the lipstick. Other times, I find something great about wherever I happen to be. Or enjoy working for a while from somewhere unexpected.
When I feel a wee bit low or sensitive, it can still push some ancient button about being overlooked - like not being picked for netball in grade four [or any grade - mainly coz I sucked]. But this hazy memory makes me cognizant of being diligent about keeping appointments or giving as much notice as I can about a change in circumstance.
Be accepting of the reality of our new may-need-to-cancel-at-short-notice culture. But also be thoughtful.
How do you handle these moments?
